Hollywood sign getting facelift

From BBC news: Another plastic-surgery patient in Hollywood.

The sign in the Hollywood hills was unveiled in 1923 and quickly became a tourist attraction.

But its constant exposure to the elements means it needs a touch-up, with two private San Diego companies donating the time and money.

(Emphasis mine.) Doesn't that just reflect poorly on Angelinos? Are they such tight-wads that a couple of generous firms in San Diego must donate their time and skills to restoring LA's most famous landmark? Or are they so blasabout the Hollywood sign that it's deemed too uncool to do the work?
